What is the favorite book you remember as a child?
The Black Stallion! I loved horses as a child and was a competent rider, so the beautiful, untamed stallion in the story captivated me from the start...

Christine Young

Christine Young: What or who inspired you to start writing?
For years my husband would encourage me to write. His encouragement sounded something like this: “Honey, write a book already!” I would think about it and answer that I just didn’t have an entire story in my head...
Genre Blending
Unabridged Andra
January 15, 2016
What genre is Horizon? I’m often asked that question, and while it solidly belongs on the shelves next to other science fiction novels, it’s actually much more! I first heard the term “space opera” at a pitch slam a few years ago...
10 Things I Wish I Knew About Being An Author
Musings and Ramblings
January 22, 2016
1. A completed manuscript is a draft.
It isn’t even close to the finished product!Typing the last word on the last page of my first novel was one of most satisfying things I’d ever done. Writing a book had been on my bucket list of personal and professional accomplishments for years, and when it was finally finished, I was giddy...

Tabitha: I’ve joked that I currently write science fiction because of Star Wars, but there’s actually some truth behind this!
Write a Book Already!
Where the Story Comes First
January 29, 2016
I wanted to be a writer when I was a little girl – also an astronaut, an archeologist, and a doctor. I almost got there with the doctor thing, but medical school with small children was, for me, an impossible balancing act...

Kit 'N Kabookle

Give us a fun or interesting fact you learned researching this book.
I really had fun naming my characters and planets! Some of the names I took from star charts or cities around the world, but Caeli’s planet is actually named after the astronomical and mathematical manual written by Ptolemy around 105 BC – The Almagest...
The Voices in My Head

February 5, 2016
Creating characters is such fun! Sometimes a character will appear in my mind, complete with a personality, career, and name, without having a story yet. When this happens, I’ll file them away and tell them to wait their turn! With Horizon, before I began writing, I had two ideas swirling around...

What does a typical day in your life look like? And how does your writing routine fit into your day?

How much of yourself is reflected in this book, and how?
"There’s a big chunk of survival fiction in the first part of Horizon. Caeli is living alone in the wilderness, fending for herself, and living off the land. I grew up in a rural neighbourhood until I was twelve years old and spent most of my playtime outdoors, in the woods, exploring and climbing trees...

What was the most difficult part about working on this book?
From a craft point of view, I really loved writing the action scenes and some of the more intense dialogue sequences. Those came easily to me. My challenge was, and still is, world building without info dumping.

Who came up with the cover concept for this work?
The immensely talented Steven Meyer-Rassow did both the cover art and interior design for Horizon. One of the major reasons I chose to use an indie publisher and not sign with a small press was so I could maintain control of the cover art and design. I’m not able to do that type of work myself (no skill in that area!), but I wanted to collaborate with someone whose style and artistry resonated with my own. Every single image of Steven’s that I could find was stunning, and when we discussed my project, I knew he really understood my vision...

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I wasn’t sure if it would be more sci-fi or contemporary-ish. Much to my surprise, it felt to me to have more of a contemporary style with romance with some sci-fi mixed in. The characters are written well and well detailed...

I’ve gone mad – why don’t you come with me? Some people just don’t understand us writers. Name a quirky, writer-thing you do that friends wish you didn’t.
Well, this is more a quirky Tabitha thing because I did it even when I worked in an office. I talk to myself. And sing under my breath. All the time. One of my colleagues used to throw things at me, but most of them ignored me. Now at home nobody pays any attention...
